About Great Lighthouses of Ireland

Great Lighthouses of Ireland
For hundreds of years lighthouses have helped seafarers find their way. Now they shine their light on a truly unique experience around the stunning coastline of Ireland.
Great Lighthouses of Ireland, is an all-island tourism initiative, developed by the Commissioners of Irish Lights, the General Lighthouse Authority for the island of Ireland.
Featuring twelve lighthouses and two lighthouse-related experiences in breathtaking coastal locations, Great Lighthouses of Ireland offers visitors from home and abroad the chance to visit or stay in a lighthouse, to discover more about their history, to appreciate the spectacular natural world around them, to understand the technology at work in lighthouses today and to meet the people who are passionate about these unique places.
The Great Lighthouses of Ireland project is supported by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA cross-border Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Commissioners of Irish Lights
The mission of Irish Lights is Safe Navigation at Sea. We are a maritime organisation delivering essential 24/7 safety and navigation services around the coast of Ireland (North and South), 365 days a year. Our vision is to protect lives, property, trade and the environment by delivering next-generation maritime services at the interface of navigation technology, engineering and data management. Playing a lead role in maritime safety, Irish Lights operates a 24-hour emergency response function. Irish Lights is responsible for Maritime Aids to Navigation under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention. This remit includes the provision and maintenance of over 340 general aids to navigation, the superintendence of approx. 3,200 local aids to navigation, and marking or removing dangerous wrecks outside harbour areas around Ireland.
Irish Lights strategy Sea Seas- Connected Coasts 2018-22 sets out the various focus areas of activity for the organisation one of which is to promote the alternative of lighthouses and other adjacent buildings surplus to operational requirements, as tourism attractions whilst also recognising the strategic value of its heritage assets within the tourism sector and local communities. The Irish Lights tourism and heritage initiative, ‘Great Lighthouses of Ireland’ was developed in partnership with local communities and offers visitors from home and abroad the chance to visit or stay in a working lighthouse. As an innovative and complementary use of lighthouse heritage it is successfully building reputation and recognition for Irish Lights core navigation safety services whilst also positively impacting on coastal communities and integrated into Ireland’s national tourism strategies.
Irish Lights also provides a range of contract commercial services including ship charter, buoy and maritime data. We provide value added services to support the development of the broader maritime economy including Met and Coastal Data Services.
