Telling the fascinating story of Ireland’s lighthouses and their continuing importance in modern Irish life, the brand new series ‘Great Lighthouses of Ireland’ is as compelling as it is beautifully-shot.

Episode one of the four-part series featured stunning footage of many of the 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland. It also included the story of Wexford’s historic Hook Head, the country’s very first lighthouse, and revealed just why so many keepers loved being stationed at Ballycotton. While episode two revealed how Ireland became a world leader in lighthouse engineering. Often working in hostile and treacherous natural locations, Ireland’s lighthouse engineers and builders used great ingenuity to achieve what seemed practically impossible. Episode three revealed the momentous chapters of history that our lighthouses were witness to, from shipwrecks to both World Wars; while episode four looked towards the lighthouses’ future in the age of electronic and GPS navigation.
