A Scottish lighthouse goes dark. A visiting supply ship finds the building in order. But the keepers have vanished without trace…

Part of the Irish National Opera’s new season tour; Hook, Valentia and Fanad lighthouses will set the scene for stunning outdoor screenings of Peter Maxwell Davies’ spooky chamber opera ‘The Lighthouse’.

Based on true events that took place in the Outer Hebrides in December 1900, these unique outdoors screenings mark the world premiere of this new film version of the opera directed by Edwina Casey.

Sung in English (with English subtitles too), three singers in multiple roles explore the psychological state of the fractious lightkeepers, relive an official investigation and project a supernatural explanation. The composer, who based the structure of the opera on the ‘Tower of the Tarot’, leaves no simple answers.

One of three new films produced by the Irish National Opera this year when lockdown did not allow live performances, these outdoor screenings promise to be an unforgettable way to experience culture on our idyllic coastline.

The screening duration is 70 minutes, seating and headsets will be supplied and capacity is limited to 50.

All tickets must be booked in advance, there will not be any box office operating on the night of the performance. All performances are weather permitting.

Tickets can be booked until 5pm on the day of the performance.
